Hello reader. My name is Julian and I am studying Commerce with specialization in Marketing at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Let me interview myself so you can learn a bit about who I am.
You have an accent, where are you from?
It’s funny that you noticed, given that there are no audio files on this website. After my mother put me into this world in a hospital near Frankfurt in Germany, I spent most of my time growing up in a small village between Hamburg and Berlin until I graduated from high school.
So now you want to become a businessman. Did you ever work in your life?
Yes, upon finishing high school in 2009 I worked for 2 years in countless different jobs. I was a warehouse clerk for a large office supplies wholesaler (6 months), a caretaker for a Kindergarten (9 months), stacked shelves in a supermarket (3 months) and worked as a sales representative and delivery driver for a meal delivery company (12 months). When I was still in high school, I also started my own little business of reselling collectibles (video games, movies, vintage HiFi) and became involved as a contributor and community monderator with several internet communities. Right now, I am the administrator of a popular German video games website (www.triggerzone.de).
Sounds amazing. Do you have fun in life, too? Work ain’t all there is!
Yes, I believe it is extremely important to have passions that you can pursue independently to your professional goals and interests. I am a fanatic of 20th century history and culture and I adore contemporary movies and vintage video games. I generally spend my free time researching cultural trends, company histories (did you know that Nintendo manufactured copying machines for offices in the early 1970’s?) and try to expand my vast collection of vintage Japanese video games and classic vinyl records.
I am impressed. Random question: Your most inspirational idol?
That is a very hard question to answer, but I believe my most inspirational person, or duck, would be Scrooge McDuck, a fictional character created by the genius Carl Barks in 1947. In his adventures, Scrooge McDuck is often portrayed as a cold-hearted, greedy, stingy “businessduck” who does not care about anything but money. However, reading between the lines reveals that this old duck is not as bitter as it seems, and that his heart is at the right place. Back when I was a child, the amazing stories fascinated me but now that I grow older, I begin to appreciate Scrooge’s wisdom and ethics as a businessman. He would gamble his money with risky investments for a quick buck and he will always take full responsibility for any mistake he made. While certainly not all of Scrooge’s character traits are those of an idol, I believe that his refusal of meaningless consumerism and sense of responsibilty for his actions is something that can be very inspiring.
