In English 301, we will study the principle of written and online communication in business, professional and technical situations. In written communication, we will gain the strategies of writing abstracts, proposals, applications, reports and correspondence. In addition, learning the abilities of composing emails, texts, web Foli and networking are required in online communications. Most importantly, we will discuss what the reviewer thinks and how to improve our writing better. This combination of practices and discussions makes our writing stronger.
I have four expectations for this course by the end of the term. First, I want to improve my wiring proficiency. Since I am an international student, my writing ability is often lower than native speakers’. They know what expressions to be used intuitionally, which is difficult for me to do. However, a lot of experiences to write in this class would help me become a better writer. Second, I would like to learn various ways of writings such as proposals, resumes, and emails. The ways of writings are often different depending on the situations. Through this class, I can learn an appropriate style, a structure, and a voice in each situation. Third, I will learn editing, proofreading and revision strategies. These strategies are very crucial to write better. Peers’ reviews will surely help me to learn what are missing in my writings and how I edit, proofread, and revise my papers. Fourth, I can obtain new points of view from my classmates. They probably have their feelings and ideas which are different from mine. For example, reading my peers’ papers, I can learn their ideas and how to express them in writing. Recognizing other classmates’ points of view makes me improve my writing, ideas, and myself. Overall, I will improve my writing ability, learn a variety of writings, learn editing, proofreading, and revision strategies, and recognize new points of view. I would like to make what I learn in this class valuable for my future career.
