why do we do the things we do?

Couple years ago, through a certain program, I was able to receive a three-week orientation on various methodologies for teaching English as a foreign language to young learners. There were two key points that still remains with me today:

  1. The instructor should try to stimulate children’s interest in the subject.
  2. This interest then must transition into self-motivation to facilitate long-term learning of the subject.

Simply stated yet what hard work to achieve! At times, an entire class could be used just for warm-up exercises to generate the young learners’ interest in English.

In many ways, I guess much of the way one may begin an activity begins with an interest in the subject. By becoming involved in the topic of interest, one may come to know more about the subject than to begin with. However, interest is not enough; for at times, difficulties may be encountered which tests one’s resolve to achieve their goals. Somehow, along the way, what first began as interest has developed into something more substantial – as interest alone cannot be the lonely driving force behind the reasons of why we do the things we do.

In all honesty, at times I may not realize why I am doing what I do. Yet, I have behaved and carried out an action in such a manner that reflects who I am. So where do these reactions stem from? Why do I do the things I do?

I believe that I am created for a purpose –all things that occurred, are occurring and will occur in my life are not without meaning or reason. My history – what I have encountered, the places I have been, the people I have met and connected with – my life’s experiences, have ultimately shaped who I am up to present day, and my being exudes these experiences through my behaviour. The goals I aim to achieve for my future are fueled by an internal self-motivator driven by my past. As I encounter new experiences, they are sure to shape my future outlook and my degree of desire and also the paths I may choose to walk on in order to reach my goals.

Keeping this in mind, I feel it sheds light on the importance on the deciding of my actions today – for it is sure to shape my actions of tomorrow.
