Over the next decade, costs of bTB control are predicted to <strong>exceed\u00a0\u00a31 billion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To fully understand net cost or benefit\u00a0of bTB control by badger culling, one needs to consider costs of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>bTB for livestock industries<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Losses from culled cattle to farmers -&gt; 26,000 cattle slaughtered\u00a0in 2011\n<ul>\n<li>Average cost to bTB infected farm =\u00a0\u00a334,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Harmed relationships with trading partners<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Scientific trials -&gt; ~\u00a350 million<\/li>\n<li>Vaccine development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Badger culls<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Free-shooting -&gt; done by farmers, at no cost to government except policing<\/li>\n<li>Trapping -&gt; labour-intensive<\/li>\n<li>Gassing -&gt; requires special equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to mathematical models by Smith et al.
