Scope of Practice

CSEP-CPT (Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology – Certified Personal Trainer)

A CSEP-CPT is sanctioned to:

  • Administer the CPAFLA to healthy individuals, as determined by all negative answers on an unmodified PAR-Q.  If any answer is positive they must be cleared to exercise by their physician. All CPAFLA fitness appraisals must be preceded by the participant signing an informed consent form.
  • Interpret the results of a client´s fitness appraisal in relation to the Health Benefit Zones for persons of similar gender and age as provided in the CPAFLA and CSEP-CPT manuals.
  • Provide a well structured physical activity and fitness plan to help the client address any particular weakness identified and/or interests expressed including individualized exercise prescriptions using various modes of exercise and exercise equipment.
  • Design and lead exercise sessions with a client or group of clients using various pieces of fitness/exercise equipment.
  • Monitor and document a client’s physical activity/exercise program leading to safe and effective program planning and progression.

CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists)

A CSCS is sanctioned to:

  • professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of improving athletic performance.
  • They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs
  • provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention.
  • Recognizing that their area of expertise is separate and distinct from athletic trainers, chiropractors, physical therapists, physicians and registered dieticians. CSCSs consult with and refer athletes to these professionals when appropriate.

 DPM (Doctor of Podiatrict Medicine)

A DPM is sanctioned to:

  • perform surgery
  • perform complete medical histories and physical examinations
  • prescribe medications
  • set fractures and treat sports-related injuries
  • prescribe and fit orthotics, insoles, and custom-made shoes
  • order and perform physical therapy
  • take and interpret X-rays and other imaging studies
  • work as valued members of a community’s health care team

CK (Certified Kinesiologist)

-Specialists in human movement

A CK is sanctioned to:

  • assess human movement, performance and function by applying the science of biomechanics, anatomy, physiology, and psychomotor.
  • rehabilitation, prevention, and management of disorders to maintain, rehabilitate or enhance movement, function, and performance
  • consulting services, conduct research and develop policies related to rehabilitation, human motor performance, ergonomics, and occupational health and safety.

Practicum Students

-in the process of obtaining their undergraduate degree in Kinesiology/Human Kinetics

Practicum Students are sanctioned to:

  • Shadow the supervisor they are working with (any certified employee)
  • Only engage in practical work with a client under the supervision of the supervisor and client’s approval

Fitness Instructor

A Fitness Instructor is sanctioned to:

  • Give dynamic fitness classed that are safe and fun to join
  • Exercise modifications for various levels of participants
  • Spark a motivational exercise environment
  • Teach a variety of class formats (step, low impact, boxing, muscle conditioning)
  • Provide effective exercise demonstration and instruction
  • Support and encourage all participants

Lifeguards

-First Aid: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) training

A Lifeguard is sanctioned to:

  • Enforce rules in order to anticipate problems/injuries
  • Maintain concentrated observation of the duty area and its users in order to anticipate problems (this will enable the lifeguard to intervene with one of the drowning prevention measures) and to identify an emergency quickly.
  • Supervise the use of other equipment when allocated to that duty (such as water slides or any other activities taking place)
  • Carry out rescues and initiate other emergency action as necessary
  • Give immediate first aid in the event of injury to a bather or other incident
  • Communicate with bathers and other users to help fulfill the above tasks
