Welcome to my home page.  Let me start by saying that this UBC blog is a work in progress.  The space that I am creating will eventually become a space to find out more about me such as my academic and professional achievements.    I invite you to visit often and explore my blog as this space will continue to evolve over the next 12 weeks.

English 301 Technical Writing is  offered through online learning at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Erika Paterson instructs the online English course which is worth three-credits upon successful completion, using her instructor blog as the teaching platform.   Since this course is offered through a digital platform, students require the use of a  computer and have access to an internet connection.  The opportunity to discuss and practice creating abstracts, proposal, applications, reports, correspondence and online communications such as emails, texts, Web Folio and networking are clearly laid out in the syllabus.

This course is intended for students from various disciplines including, but not limited to, business, science,  health sciences, arts and co-op students.   Students will work on the course material in independent study and within groups of 4 as Dr. Erika Paterson remains in the background providing feedback and guidance.

The duration of the course is twelve weeks divided into four units.  Each unit is delivered over a timeframe of  three weeks. The professor’s expectations as well as specific course requirements are clearly defined.  The students will be able to demonstrate  proficiency within the course material as they master creations such as an online Web Folio, a professional website and a LinkedIn profile. Students are also expected to contribute to the online discussions on a regular basis, perform peer reviews and improve writing and self-editing abilities.

The required text for this course is: Lannon, John M. & Don Klepp 2012 Technical Communication 4th Canadian ed. Toronto: Pearson. There is also a list of recommended texts provided to support the students learning experience and include examples of a dictionary, a thesaurus and an english grammar usage guide.

As a registered dental hygienist working in clinical private practice I have been called upon to develop a nutritional assessment booklet that includes a three day food diary for my clients, record progress notes into the record of treatment,  write referral letters to specialists and complete my professional portfolio for submission to my governing college; the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario.    I am especially excited to learn how to make the most of my Web Folio.  I am already thinking of how I can expand my website to include education material to support my clients oral health.  Finally,  I hope to  to improve my professional communication skills.

Thank you so much for visiting.  Enjoy!!
