Assessment

Reflection on Creating a Quiz on Moodle:

Today, I created a quiz as part of my Moodle course.  The goal was to create 3 multiple choice questions, 3 matching questions, 2 short answer questions, and 2 essay questions that added to a total of 15 points. In addition, the quiz needed to include a time limit, one question with an embedded image or graphic, and pre-programm feedback for students on at least one question.

Similar to my experiences designing the overall course appearance of my Moodle, I found the process of creating a Moodle quiz relatively easy. The quiz design process is user-friendly to the point that I didn’t need to reference any manual to complete the necessary tasks. I used questions similar to ones I use on the first paper quiz in my Exploring French course, so I the question design process started easily.

In terms of challenges, my main problems related to the time involved in the quiz creation and the scoring process.  Even though I had the questions prepared, I found myself taking a couple hours to type the questions, type the answers, and adjust the formatting of the quiz to my liking. I still don’t find the design of my quiz visually pleasing, which I would suggest needs to be improved in future editions of Moodle. I was also not satisfied with how Moodle automatically assigns a “zero” to essay questions in the overall quiz score until the teacher manually changes the grade.

Regardless, I can still see myself using Moodle online assessments with my students.  In my opinion, the benefits outweigh the consequences.  In particular, I can see myself importing photos into the quiz questions and having students name famous landmarks or people in a Moodle quiz for my Exploring French course.
