About Me
Hi there! Welcome to my blog that follows my educational journey and reflections I have along the way to becoming a teacher. My name is Bronwyn and I am a Teacher Candidate from the University of British Columbia completing the Bachelor of Education program in the Teaching English Language Learners through a Cross-Curricular Case-Based Approach (TELL-3C) cohort. In this cohort we use an inquiry-based approach that combines critical thinking and problem solving in order to respond to various issues that may occur in real world educational settings. We also focus on differentiated instruction and ways to help meet our students’ needs through multimodal approaches while remaining respectful of all diverse backgrounds and individual needs. I chose to be in this cohort because I recognize that our schools are diverse communities and it is important to make all students feel welcome and included in the classroom.
I first knew I wanted to become a teacher in my second year of university. I began the year unsure of what path I wanted to pursue so I joined the UBC Trek program to gain some volunteering experience. I volunteered in a Grade 3 and 4 combined class at Thunderbird Elementary School and immediately working in the classroom setting and helping students with their schoolwork allowed me to see that this is the life path I wanted to take. Seeing how I was able to impact the lives of these students in one short year really motivated me to continue volunteering to work towards my goal of being a teacher. Since this experience, I have also volunteered in many other classrooms, as well as worked at summer camps and as a soccer coach.
I have a passion for music: I played the piano since I was 4 years old and also played the clarinet in school. I was able to share this passion with my students in my first experience volunteering at Thunderbird as I helped reached the students to play the recorder. Other hobbies of mine include reading, writing, baking, running, and hiking. I also enjoy travelling to explore and learn about new cultures. I had the opportunity to work in an elementary classroom in Switzerland and I hope to do more volunteer work around the world in the future, to broaden my horizons and help those in need.
