Riddle of the Week: What stays in one corner while traveling around the world?
Reminders
- Field Trip: Kokanee Fish Festival – Friday September 21st at Bridge Creek in the Industrial Park
- The Kokanee Fish Festival is designed for students to learn about the life cycle, cultural significance, and conservation efforts which contribute to the Kokanee fish population in Revelstoke.
- We will be leaving BVE on the bus at 12:15 and returning on the bus back to BVE at 2:10.
- Please pack a snack for your child that easy for them to put into their pocket to bring along.
- Please ensure that you have received a field trip form and return it signed so your child can attend.
- If you would like to volunteer please just let me know, hlangille@sd19.bc.ca
- A few students have been consistently late for school in our first 2 weeks. By arriving on time, your child will avoid missing content and directions that disrupt the daily agenda. Discuss and plan the morning routine with your child to facilitate punctuality.
- Please return all signed BVE forms as soon as possible so the school will have updated information.
- While dropping your child outside the classroom at the beginning of the day, please allow them to practice their independence by organizing their belongings in their cubby space on their own.
Language
This week, students will continue to learn about the Daily 5 routine. We will be focusing on ‘Read to Self’, how to choose a “good fit” book, and successful spots to work. Students will be learning about stamina and how to choose wise places to sit and read independently. Please ask your child about stamina.
Writer’s Workshop: Last week students learned about brain pockets and how we use our brain pockets when we read and write. This week students will use their memory brain pocket as well as their fact brain pocket to write a few sentences about themselves to add to their pastel portrait project.
Students will be introduced to GUM, which stands for: give it a go, underline it, and move on, when it comes to spelling in their writing. This strategy allows students to try spelling the word on their own, recognizing when they might not have it right, and moving on so that they can get their thoughts written. Please reinforce this strategy at home.
Library: Tuesdays, 11:10-11:50.
Read Aloud: We will continue to read My Father’s Dragon written by Ruth Stiles Gannett.
Math
Students will practice their Math Daily 3: math by myself, math with someone, and math writing.
We will continue our patterning work. Students have be introduced to core and repeat patterns, pattern attributes and will continue to use a variety of materials in the classroom to practice and illustrate their learning and understanding over the next few weeks.
Arts Education
Music: Wednesdays, 8:30am with Mrs. Snider
Pastel Portrait Project: We started practicing pastel techniques this week so that we can use them to create a pastel self-portrait at the end of this week. I am hoping that every student is able to bring in a photo of their face so that they have a reference while doing their pastel portrait on Friday.
Gym
Mondays (with myself), Tuesdays (Mrs. Snider), Thursdays (Mr. MacKenzie): 8:30am
Class Community
Fresh Grade: Thank you to all parents who have returned the required forms promptly. For those of you waiting to be invited to Fresh Grade this will commence in the next few weeks. I have created profiles for your child, however need time to teach use of iPads as well as how to connect our work to the core competencies outlined in the new BC curriculum: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/competencies
Agendas: Students will be writing a sentence (or 2) most afternoons about their day. Please check their agenda in the evening and send it back to school each morning. The agenda cost is $7. Please send that in to school as soon as possible. Thank you.
Morning Greeting: It is very important for me to greet each child in the morning with a handshake at the door. This is an important skill to learn when meeting anyone new and is something that will continue all year long.
Peace Circles: Every Friday we will end our week with a Peace Circle. This allows the children to reflect on their week of learning. Often I will ask them to recognize a classmate or speak about something they are proud of.
This looks great! Thanks for keeping us up-to-date.
Mirra’s Mom,
