Written Reports
***Please keep your child’s report card and send back the brown envelope signed. If you have any comments or concerns please do not hesitate to come and speak with me regarding your child.
Swimming: Grade 2 students have begun swimming lessons Tuesdays from 1:00-2:00pm. Upcoming swimming days are: Tuesday April 30 , Tuesday May 7, Tuesday May 14th
Language
Students have settled into their Daily 5 routine. They have successfully learned ‘Read to Self’, ‘Work on Writing’, ‘Word Work/Study’, ‘Read to Someone’, and ‘Listen to Reading’. Each day during our Daily 5 time, students choose the order in which they want to practice their literacy. Students generally have time for 3/5 options each day. I am able to conference individually with students or in small groups each day and set goals for reading and writing.
***WORD WORK/STUDY: word study work will be changing this term. Students will continue to work within their level on short vowels, blends, digraphs, long vowels etc. in class, but will also work on 8 specific high-frequency words each week that will be tested on Fridays. These 8 words will be written in their agendas each Monday so that you and your child can practice at home.
Grammar: During the spring term, students will be learning grammar and the parts of speech. Word study will continue, with words still coming home for practice as well as spelling check-ins on Fridays.
Writer’s Workshop:
Students have worked through the writing process to write their story and will produce a final copy that they will share aloud with their classmates.
Students are also working on writing a letter back to their pen-pal in Vancouver.
POETRY
We will be studying poetry for much of the spring term. Students will be writing, reading and sharing poetry. They will create a poetry booklet and hopefully our learning will culminate with a poetry tea party to celebrate!
Library: Tuesdays at 11:10am.
Read Aloud: We are reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets written by J.K. Rowling.
Math
Students have been working at their own level with the math materials. Some students are still practicing their subtraction skills, while others are doing dynamic addition into the thousands. Some students have started graphing and algebraic thinking.
Science
Salmon Study: All of our Chinook salmon eggs have grown into fry. This week students will continue to study this stage of the life cycle. We are also learning about the social responsibility we have to take care of our streams, rivers and oceans. Students are learning about how the tank in our hallway is cleaned and are feeding the fish as they need. Ask your child about the salmon! They have so much to tell!

Our Chinook salmon fry are almost ready to be released back into their stream. Mrs. Embury/Ms. Ford’s Grade 2 class and Ms. Langille’s Grade 2 class will be travelling to:
Kingfisher Interpretive Centre (east of Enderby) on Friday, May 17th, 2019.
The day will include activities/stations relating to salmon and their environment, and the local First Nations groups. As well, each student will be releasing a salmon into the Shuswap River.
Students need to bring:
- lunch, 2 snacks & water
- comfortable walking shoes (no open toes or sandals)
- suitable outdoor clothing
- sunscreen, hat, raincoat (depending on the weather)
- a book, music or non-electronic game for the bus ride
If you do not want your child to accompany his or her class on this trip, please contact Ms. Ford or Ms. Langille and we will arrange alternate supervision for your child on this day.
We will be travelling by bus, leaving the school at 8:00 am and aiming for a return to Begbie View Elementary at 4:15 pm. Students must be at school by 7:50 am on Friday morning. Students will be supervised by Ms. Ford, Ms. Langille and parent volunteers.
Social Studies
We are continuing to study ourselves with the hope that understanding ourselves will lead to a greater understanding of the people in our community and the world. This week we are going to discuss diversity.
Trips to the Museum
June 14th: Students will piece together a timeline of the history of Revelstoke.
Arts Education
Music: Wednesdays, 8:30am with Mrs. Snider

Gym
Mondays (nature walk through the back woods with myself), Tuesdays (Mrs. Snider), Thursdays (Mr. MacKenzie): 8:30am
Classroom Community
This week we will continue Play is the Way. Students will be learning various games to support the core competencies outlined in the curriculum.
