Re: What Will Target Bring?

Isn’t one Walmart enough?

UBC Blogger, Karen Lee, stated that Target, America’s 2nd largest discount retailer bought out Zellers and is currently on a quest to take over Canada’s discount store market alongside Walmart. Target’s main competition is Walmart, who is also buying out Zellers locations for more openings for their company.

With the help of Sobeys, one of Canada’s largest food chains, Target will attempt to seek loyal Canadian customers. Personally, I think the arrival of Target in Canada is a great idea. Target will add another option for Canadian shoppers, such as myself, and a variety of items will also be offered. Apart from the edibles, Target also sells a variety of products such as clothes, furniture, electronics, and beauty items.

The first Target store will be in Toronto in March 2013. However, Target doesn’t plan to stop there. Up to 135 Target stores will be opened by the end of 2013. Finally, there will be an equivalent discount retailer to compete against the ethically questionable Walmart.

Canada’s Unemployment Rate is Going Down!

Why do students spend thousands of dollars every year to attend classes at UBC or any other post secondary institute?

To hopefully land a decent paying job in the future, obviously.

Lucky for us Canadians, our economy is not as highly affected by the global downfall relative to other countries such as our neighbours the Americans for instance. Our current rate of unemployment is at a low of 7.1 percent as opposed to USA’s 9.1 percent.

According to economists, our job market seems stable and “healthy”. Also, Shahrzad Mobasher Fard, an economist, said that our economy grow rather than fall. After reading this, I felt a sense of relief because now I know I’m not spending hours of my life poring over books for no reason. Previously, the abnormally high unemployment rate for young adults in countries such as Egypt gave me quite the scare. This article is a little piece of reassurance that Canada’s economy is still standing strong.

The youth unemployment rate of 14% is extremely low relative to other countries. I am definitely proud to be a Canadian.

Death of Steve Jobs=No more vision for Apple?

iPhone 4, or 4S. I can't really tell.

iPhone 4, or 4S. I can't really tell.

iPod, iPad, MacBook Pros and Airs, iTunes and every other high end Apple product that has been released since its founding in 1976 has been reshaping and redefining technology in our society. The co-founder of Apple and long time CEO, Steve Jobs, passed away on October 5th 2011 only weeks after releasing his CEO title to Tim Cook.

The current concern is that Apple’s product line might suffer without the influencial leadership of Steve Jobs. Beginning with the release of not the rumoured iPhone 5, but the slightly disappointing iPhone 4S which looks EXACTLY the same as the iPhone 4 with differents specs.Tim Cook, the new CEO of Apple, has big shoes to fill. The first product launched under his leadership, the iPhone 4S, did not win him any more fans. Hopefully, Apple’s new managerial type CEO will prove his suitability for his position and impress the market with new Apple products, just as Steve Jobs did.

Asian Invasion in Iceland?

Possible vacation spot?

Possible vacation spot?

Mr.Huang Nubo, the 129th richest man in China, decides to bid on 3%, or 30,000 hectares of Iceland’s land to build an “eco resort.” Iceland, being a small country, isn’t used to such large offers like this. Also, there is much skepticism about Mr.Nubo’s offer due to his links to the Chinese government. Although Nubo denies working with the government, many analysts argue that Iceland should take caution to Nubo’s offer.

Iceland doesn’t want to be part of the “Asian Invasion” that seems to be taking the world by storm? With China’s rapidly rising economy, who wouldn’t be cautious? If 3% of the country is owned by a Chinese millionaire, what political issues will Iceland come to face?
