Pro D

I am not sure if a website is an ideal way for Lenora to present her Pro D information. The first issue is that her internet connection is not up to par. There are a few ways around this. One suggestion I would make is for the creation of an online forum. These are easy to set up and because of the simple graphic user interface (GUI) the lack of adequate internet speed is negated and is not as relevant. One aspect of a forum that could be beneficial is the communicative aspect. Everyone can talk virtually and ask relevant questions. Even if Lenora is unavailable to answer questions about the Pro D somebody else could answer.

I would also recommend that Lenora creates a powerpoint presentation to share with her colleagues. I suggest this for a few reasons. The presentation can be left at the schools, where her peers can look at it when time permits. It is easily to copy and people can view it on their home computers. Lenora can set up an email list serve and send out the powerpoint to her colleagues. As well, Lenora can post it on the forum, if that is the method that she chooses. Powerpoints, although they have limitations, (I’m not a huge fan) can be an excellent to present basic information. They are usually a smaller file size, which would work very well for those that have dial up internet access. Once it is downloaded, you do not need web access to continue with the presentation. The time commitment would be minimal for this option.

As an educator I worry about putting too much emphasis on webpages and online education in settings where the students do not have a high access to the internet. In my experiences, this can only create a divide amoung students. “Without a computer, “there’s a kind of a wall, a barrier to the world,’’ said Ying Wu, 18, a senior at J.E.B. Stuart High School in Falls Church, Va. (Gowen)” Often, when work is designed to be done online it can be harder for students if there web access is insufficient. They become dependent on libraries and and after school hours to be able to respond to the work. Enclosed is an article from last years associated press that addresses this issue.
