Unpacking Assumptions

Good use of technology is technology that enhances learning. There are many concepts that can be taught in math and science with very low level technology- a pencil and paper- or no technology- having students simply observe. These can provide meaningful and memorable learning experiences. What is important is that the technology that counts is the one that makes learning more meaningful by helping the learner
– to see something they couldn’t see before
– to understand something in a new way
– to solve a problem
– to question something
– to create something
– to connect ideas
– to demonstrate understanding
– to test a hypothesis
– to explore.

This list is very incomplete-but I think if technology can help a learner do any of the above it “counts”.

I was born in Saskatchewan but moved to Alberta at a young age. I graduated from UBC with a B.Ed. I have been teaching or working in the literacy field for a long time. I began my teaching career in Nigeria and am now employed by Palliser Regional School in Alberta where I teach Math in a small rural jr-sr high school. I am currently on leave this year so I can complete my degree.

My husband and I have three children, the last of which has just flown the nest. This will be a year of major changes!! We have a passion for travelling. We have lived in Africa for several years, and have also wandered around the world for a year. We also love to ski, hike, read and spend time with family and friends.

I really like your summary Bev. It is a great way to so much of what we endeavor to achieve! I think the ability to question and explore strike me as the two top ways we can instill a love of learning (and the ability to learn) in those we are priviledged to teach/coach/mentor/instruct/interface with.
