The name pretty much says it all: the chemistry involved with living things. The love child of biology and chemistry.<\/p>\n<p>But what does that <em>actually<\/em> mean?<\/p>\n<p>Often, it&#8217;s about finding the &#8220;why&#8221; and the &#8220;how&#8221; behind many biological principles. How does a cell create a protein from a gene? How does the food you eat get converted into energy? Why are mitochondria the powerhouse of the cell?<\/p>\n<p>Just like how biomolecules come together to build larger complexes, biochemistry is built up of the knowledge of multiple disciplines. Analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, and mathematics are just a few of the areas that come together to help us figure out the processes that makeup living organisms.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Biochemistry at UBC<\/h2>\n<p>UBC&#8217;s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is home to a diverse group of students and faculty who share a passion for innovation and discovery. Here, a sense of community is built through late nights, early lectures, and an insane amount of caffeine.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>After Your Degree<\/h2>\n<p>While a lot of people do pursue graduate studies or academic research, that is by no means the only path for biochemistry graduates!
