Pinus – Reproduction

REPRODUCTION IN THE CONIFERS

Pinus

The cones of conifers are either male or female and both types are usually found on the same plant. Female cones are larger than male cones, and may persist for several years on a tree. The morphology of female cones and their position on a branch are useful field characteristics for identification. Prior to pollination the female cones are usually greenish in color and soft, whereas afterwards they become woody and often increase markedly in size. At maturity the scales of the female cone open and the seeds are then dispersed by the wind.
