The ground tissue system consists of all tissues other than the epidermal and vascular tissues. There are three main ground tissues: PARENCHYMA and COLLENCHYMA are simple tissues which may serve in photosynthesis, storage, and support, and SCLERENCHYMA, which has two cell types (fibres and sclereids) which are specialized for support.
