Advice for New Teachers:

  • Be proactive – know expectations, talk with course supervisor, other TA’s and be prepared
  • Not all students want your help – focus your efforts on those who are trying
  • Try new strategies, make your teaching style appropriate for you – be true to yourself
  • Modify teaching methods to help students – not all strategies work for all students
  • Move focus from grades to skill building
  • When marking – time manage; make printout of feedback for common mistakes for all students so you can focus more time on personalized feedback
  • You can kick students out only if appropriate as a last resort
  • Your first teaching experience may not be great, but it will get better – keep learning
  • Be aware of other demands on students’ time – keep this in mind
  • Make sure you understand the challenge before you try to solve it
  • Learn their names (if you can) to show you care – they are human beings, they appreciate that you treat them like people
