How Language Shapes Generosity

Across three large-scale field experiments with over 1.5 million participants, this research finds that asking users of a U.S. edtech nonprofit to “Pay What You Want” leads to higher participation rates than a traditional “Donate What You Want” appeal, without reducing the average amount given. These findings suggest that nonprofits can raise more revenue simply by changing how they label their ask.

The UBC-DIBS Behavioural Insights Seminar series features researchers and practitioners sharing their field and lab projects using the behavioural and decision sciences to “nudge for good”.
