Social Media. A Prototype with a Narrative on a Medium’s Place

This prototype focuses on discussing how the medium of a general social media shifts the perspective and intentions of messages through mass media context. The app follows a set narrative of exploring an undefined user’s social networks through family, friends, work, and a messaging feature. In terms of theory, the main focus is the concepts of the “illusion of life” and filtering the world through the culture industry as explored by Adorno and Horkheimer in their writing, Culture Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception. Additionally, I branch into J.D. Peter’s focuses of an act of communication requiring a sender and a receiver, and the gap in between that providing space for a medium of communication to provide its own message. This main “gap” that Peters explores began my intention to create a voice of the social media itself; reflecting commentary on your personal one to one news and information and allowing for the present bias of the medium to be heard.
