Have You Scene My Ticket? – An Animated Short on Updating Media
Through my short animation project entitled “Have You Scene My Ticket?” I aim to convey how old forms of media are refreshed and updated in order to stay culturally relevant and usable in contemporary society, thus contributing to the rise of ‘new’ media. It briefly captures the evolution from using paper to online, digital platforms to authorize one’s access to functions and locations, such as the cinema. Through this, I touch on our discussions on the medium of paper and how its materiality publicly conveys cultural nuances as well as social class.
Readings that have guided my thinking include Wendy Hui Kyong Chun’s article “Introduction: Habitual New Media, or Updating to Remain (Close to) the Same,” Lothar Müller’s chapter “The Universal Substance in his book White Magic: The Age of Paper, and Cornelia Vismann’s “Cultural Techniques and Sovereignty.”
This project was drawn, animated, and edited using Adobe Animate 2019 and Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019. Music is from YouTube’s open-source Audio Library.
