Task 10: Attention Economy
(Sorry it is really bad quality but the time is 8:53)
Reflection:
Engaging with the User Inyerface online game was a rollercoaster of emotions that brought to light the intricate ways in which web and interaction designers manipulate user behavior using dark patterns. As I delved into the “game” (mental torture), I found myself increasingly frustrated by the constant barrage of flashy distractions and deceptive cues that seemed determined to steer me off course. Despite my initial enthusiasm to beat the challenge with accuracy, the overwhelming design elements left me feeling disoriented and unsure of my next move so I just put down random answers.
With each click, the UI seemed to play a game of its own, enticing me with eye catching visuals only to lead me astray. The persistent pop-up windows and strategically placed distractions pushed me to make hasty decisions, often without fully understanding the consequences as I anxious to complete the task in time. As my frustration grew, I noticed my focus shifting from accuracy to simply wanting to get through the game as quickly as possible. The initial curiosity that fueled my engagement slowly transformed into a sense of helplessness and resignation, as the relentless interface continued to test my patience and resolve. I do want to note that I did not have an urge to give up, I felt determined to “win” at all costs.
Reflecting on my experience, this task sheds light on how intricately designed user interfaces can significantly shape our perceptions and decision-making processes even if subtle. The game’s vibrant visuals and strategically placed prompts not only captured my attention but also subtly steered my choices throughout the task. While I found myself fully immersed in the dynamic environment, I couldn’t help but ponder the ways in which similar techniques are subtly employed in everyday applications for all walks of life. It made me more conscious of how certain platforms strategically guide my online behaviors and preferences, leading me to question the extent to which my digital interactions are influenced by the artful orchestration of user interface elements (Brignull, 2011). Consistent persuasive design within user interfaces creates a cohesive and intuitive user experience, fostering a sense of familiarity and trust that encourages continued engagement and positive user interactions. This realization emphasizes the importance of fostering critical awareness of the persuasive potential embedded within seemingly innocuous design choices, urging for a more mindful and discerning approach to digital engagement.
