Prompt: Describe or narrate a scenario about a building found a few years into a future in which society as we know it has come apart. Your description should address issues related to childhood and elicit feelings of admiration.

Reflection:

The inspiration of this task was through my recent experience at the VSO (Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) attending Camille Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony, as it was truly transformative. As the magnificent sounds of the organ filled the concert hall, I found myself transported into a world where music became a vibrant narrative. I was sad to see in the audience that the average age was quite high. I believe the younger generation (I am in my twenties) are missing out on some truly inspiration musical experiences. Although I believe there is place for new music, the classics should be appreciated as well.

Inspired by this organ performance, I embarked on a creative journey to craft a scenario titled “The Lost Organ.” The scenario I crafted echoes the essence of unity and restoration experienced by a group of young music students as they revived an abandoned cathedral’s grand organ.

The powerful symbolism embedded in the story resonates deeply with the themes of community, dedication, and the transformative potential of collective action. The students unwavering commitment to restoring the forgotten instrument mirrors the resilience required in fostering connections and healing societal fractures. The revitalization of the neglected cathedral, once an observer of time, stands emblematic of the potential for revitalization within our communities.

The depiction of how the revived organ’s melodies became a beacon of unity for a fractured society profoundly reflects the unifying force of music. Just as the symphony by Saint-Saëns captivated audiences, the revitalized organ’s harmonies drew people from all different walks of life together, transcending barriers and fostering newfound connections. The scenario embodies the belief in the inherent goodness and unbreakable spirit of humanity, showcasing the transformative power of music as a catalyst for healing and fostering unity.

This exercise has reinforced my belief in the transcendent nature of music, not just as an art form but as a catalyst for profound societal change. It’s a testament to the enduring ability of art to mend, connect, and inspire, even in a world marked by fragmentation and disconnection. Through this reflection, I’m reminded of the timeless impact music can have, serving as a bridge that unites diverse communities and restores our interconnectedness.

This task was truly important to give myself some perspective through speculating the future. There are parallels to the creation of “fictional products to explore possible technological futures” (Mitrović et al., 2021, pg. 14). Creating fictional stories allows the exploration of possible futures. The world of classic music is not thriving in our current age and as a music educator, I am curious how classical music evolves. Possibly for worse or for better.
