Sometimes, companies get distracted and only focus on increasing their own profits and fail to look out into the real world to see the deadly chain reaction that their product is developing. As cars became more popular and part of everyday use, the oil demand and consumption has increased. Exxon, (now ExxonMobil), has filled this demand and although it was involved in one of the most devastating human caused environmental disaster, it has become the largest refiner in the world and the fifth largest company by revenue.

Recently, InsideClimate News conducted an eight month investigation and evidence has emerged that ExxonMobil researchers have had information on how burning oil, gas and coal to produce energy would create a build up of carbon dioxide. All of this excess gas in our atmosphere would in turn, increase the global temperature. Although the scientists discovered this information back in 1978, the corporation hid this evidence from the public until now.

Executives in Exxon were blinded by the success and earnings of the company that they forgot to look into future. Now, due to the high demand and utilization of oil, our environment is experiencing harsh impacts such as oil spills in the ocean and from pipelines. The high levels of carbon dioxide are destroying the habitats of polar bears due to melting glaciers and flooding land from rising sea levels. If measures were taken immediately after studies proved that this caused global warming, new technology could have been developed earlier such as electric cars to help us become less dependent on oil and live in a greener and less polluted planet.
