Blog 10: Can DC catch up to Marvel?
DC comics have already announced the movies they are going to be releasing for the next 5 years and has already been showing sneak peaks of the upcoming movies, including movie senses from Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, or even the costume for Wonder Woman which is not release until 2017.
It is very clear that DC is following Marvel’s strategy, releasing sneak peaks earlier to get fans hyped about the movie. However, while DC seems to be better with its anime and TV series, Marvel has always have the upper hand with cinematic contents, especially after the Avengers and the Guardian of the Galaxy, so it is understandable why DC would want to catch up to Marvel as DC is behind Marvel in that aspect.
It is a big move for DC comics though to be releasing movies so intensively for the next 5 years, since apart from The Dark Knight, they haven’t been receiving particularly good reviews with DC movies such as the Man of Steal and the disappointing Green Lantern movie. On top of that, despite the excitement it brings to the fans, there are a lot of worries on the choices DC is making for the film, including the custom for Wonder Woman, which is comment to be more Greek influenced rather than sticking to the original design form the comic, which got fans a bit upset and disappointed, or the Return of the Green Lantern which is said to be in the cinema in 2020, which is quite questionable after the disappointments from the first Green Lantern movie.
Perhaps their intention is to simply get fans excited and gaining some attention to reposition themselves in the industry as they are falling behind this filming content. However, based on the movie they have currently, I wouldn’t say there is a particularly high expectation for the upcoming DC movie from an audience point of view, but I think the movie will still attract many people to watch despite DC’s past films, or maybe DC has some strategy the public is unaware of or else they would not have announced their plans this early, perhaps there is something to look forward to after all.
Either way, this announcement is a very interesting move from DC, not only it gets people excited and wondering what DC has install for the audience, but it shows that DC is stepping up the game and improving its quality to become more of a competitor for Marvel. However, certainly DC have to provide a much better content and quality to pull it off to raise its competitiveness against Marvel as they are taking a big risk with their announcements raising such expectation, or else it will lead to more disappointing fans and give negative impression on DC.
