After a pretty uneventful month in April, major streaming platforms are having an exciting month in May with some of the best movies and TV shows yet in 2022. And since it always confusing to know what movie will come to which service, we have rounded up the best streaming movies that you can expect this May.

1. Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was not the first video game adaptation of the year but it surely was the most successful one. The sequel to the surprisingly enjoyable and popular 2020 action-comedy stormed into theatres on April 8th and soon surpassed the original film’s domestic box office at $169,721,214 to take the crown for the US’s highest-grossing video game movie of all time. Considering how well the movie has done worldwide, it is not surprising at all that Paramount and Sega have already confirmed that a third movie is already in the works.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will hit Paramount+ on May 24. So, you don’t have to wait much longer to see it thanks to the studio’s 45-day theatrical window.

2. The Lost City

Another high-profile Paramount Pictures to hit the service this month is the original romantic comedy The Lost City starring Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock. The movie is about a smut novelist named Loretta (Bullock) who gets kidnapped by an eccentric billionaire (Radcliffe) while on a book tour with her hunky book cover model Alan (Tatum) for her latest book “The Lost City”. Alan who is enamored with Loretta tries to rescue her from the clutches of the kidnapper who is convinced that Loretta has based her books on actual archeological research, and plans to use her knowledge to find a secret treasure. The adventure that ensues is equally both fun and hilarious.

Grossing over $94 million at the US box office and over $163 million worldwide, The Lost City has received pretty positive reviews and will be available for streaming on Paramount+ starting Tuesday, May 10.

3. Jackass 4.5

The world’s most famous crew of “stunts and stupidity” will be back with Jackass 4.5, an extension of the fourth main installment of the Jackass film series: Jackass Forever. Just like 2.5 and 3.5 before it, 4.5 seems to consist of more of the same hilarious foolishness including unseen stunts, cast interviews, outtakes, and behind-the-scenes footage.

Jackass Forever which had a strong box office earlier this year (grossing over $80 million worldwide) is streaming on Paramount+. But Netflix secured the exclusive right to stream this new separate movie until 2024, after which it will permanently move to Paramount’s streaming platform. You can expect to stream Jackass 4.5 when it debuts on Netflix starting May 20.

4. Stranger Things 4

May 27 marks the premiere of the long-awaited fourth and penultimate season of the Netflix science-fiction hit Stranger Things and according to the cast, it will be “the most bizarre season” whose scale will be “out of this world”.

The show’s creators Matt and Ross Duffer have promised a runtime almost twice the length of any previous installment, which is probably the reason why it will be split into two volumes with the second to be released on July 1. It has been almost 3 years since we have last seen the young gang in action, but the wait will be worth it when will finally be able to binge it starting May 27.

5. The Staircase

HBO Max’s latest crime series got the viewers hooked immediately when it premiered with the first three episodes on May 5. This 8-episode true crime miniseries which has Colin Firth and Toni Collette as the lead cast is based on a true story following the life of a crime novelist and the mystery surrounding his wife’s death. From what we have seen so far, the writing has been decent and with some big twists at the end of every episode that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

If like us, you can’t wait to see how the rest of the narrative is going to unfold, you’d be pleased to know that the five remaining episodes of The Staircase are scheduled to be released weekly with the 4th episode dropping on May 12.

6. Our Father

Sticking with the true crime theme, Our Father is one of the most anticipated documentaries of the year and a very bizarre one at that. The docuseries is coming to us by way of Blumhouse Productions which is primarily known for its horror films including big titles such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Halloween.

Our Father tells the story of a well-regarded fertility doctor in Indiana called Donald Cline who had been secretly inseminating his patient with his own fresh sperm for decades. Until one day, one of his “children” finds that out via an at-home DNA testing kit and sets out to find her over 50 half-siblings. This unsettling documentary will look into the doctor’s actions and their consequences on the victims’ families as they pursue justice. Our Father will premiere on Netflix on May 11th.
