Medical tourism is a trend that is being overserved globally and one that has been prominently taking place within Canada over the past few years.

Canada is known for its accessibility to good and often inexpensive healthcare, making it a popular place to travel to when seeking procedures, including elective ones such as cosmetic surgery.

But first, what is medical tourism, and why is it growing so popular for elective cosmetic procedures?

By Definition

Medical tourism is the act of travelling internationally to seek out medical services. Some of the many reasons people seek out medical tourism are to avoid long wait times, high costs, lack of qualified surgeons, or legal regulations of their own place of origin.

In some cases, these procedures are for serious or life-saving surgeries; but in recent years, elective medical tourism to seek out cosmetic surgeries has been on the rise as well. For example, rhinoplasty can range anywhere from a few thousand dollars to $20,000 and more. This can depend very much range on where you undergo your procedure.

The nose job cost in Toronto, Canada, might be around $5000-$10,000 on average, while one in Australia may cost you between $7000-$15,000.

What Procedures Are Getting Done?

While the statistics for 2021 have not yet been released, the five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures based on 2020 statistics are:

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or the nose job, is actually the #1 most performed elective cosmetic surgery. Getting a nose job can completely transform a person’s facial symmetry and improve their breathing when performed correctly. As the nose is a very fragile and important part of your body, many come to Canada to have the surgery performed by trained surgeons who will handle their procedure with the highest level of care.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed on those seeking to improve the size and symmetry of their chest. This can be done through either breast implants, fat transfers, or a combination of the two.

Liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most popular types of plastic surgery, as it is an incredibly versatile procedure. Liposuction can be performed anywhere the body where stubborn fat can form. Liposuction can also be performed for fat transfers, where the fat removed with liposuction is repurposed to increase volumes, such as in the breasts or buttocks.

Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is performed to correct drooping of the eyelids. As we age, the skin of the eyelid can begin to droop in front of the eye, giving a person a tired and aged appearance. In severe cases, the sagging skin can obstruct vision, causing impairment in vision. Blepharoplasty tightens the underlying muscles of the eyelid and removes the excess skin for a younger and refreshed appearance.

Facelift

A facelift is able to tackle a variety of cosmetic concerns on the face at once. Through the procedure, many forms of deep lines, wrinkles, sloping brows, and sagging jowls can be treated. Other forms of facelift exist as well, like the mini facelift, which only treats minor concerns on sections of the face rather than the entire face.
