Begbie Outdoor Education: Camp Sasamat

My Community Field Experience

I have always been interested in an outdoor education and nature-related learning practices. The idea of being able to enjoy nature and teach students at the same time was very appealing to me. Needless to say, that was one of the reasons Begbie Outdoor Education was my first choice for my Community Field Experience as part of my UBC BEd program. I had no idea what to expect, but I knew I would have to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone, and of course, learn something new.

All UBC students met their community field sponsors ahead of time to introduce themselves and go over expectations and duties. I was privileged and beyond excited to find out that I would be working alongside two other teacher candidates from UBC as well as two teachers from Sir Matthew Begbie Elementary school in Vancouver and their two grade 6/7 classes. I felt welcomed and accepted the moment I met my community field sponsors and they reassured us that we would have an amazing time together and learn a lot from each other.

Scientists on a nature walk!

Let the children be free; encourage them; let them run outside when it is raining; let them remove their shoes when they find a puddle of water; and, when the grass of the meadows is damp with dew, let them run on it and trample it with their bare feet; let them rest peacefully when a tree invites them to sleep beneath its shade; let them shout and laugh when the sun wakes them in the morning as it wakes every living creature that divides its day between waking and sleeping.

Nature Walk and Halloween Preparations!

In the morning we went for a walk! What a beautiful, crisp and sunny day it was! We spotted a squirrel in the park, saw geese birds flying in the sky and chased marine fog. Then we were catching the leaves falling from the tries and measured with our body parts how far they had flown away (25 m. far off the tree in fact!). We documented our weather parameters when we got back to the classroom later on. What a busy and fun morning it was!

Day 2 (2017-08-29)

Today we worked on our morning books, read a couple of articles about Maria Montessori and her work, discussed them in small groups, learned that there were so many types of leaves that I didn’t even expect there were, drew them and sorted them, practiced leaf rubbing and went to Niobe garden to create a first landscape masterpiece! I also wrote my first English poem today! What a fantastic and busy day it was today! Whew!
