{"id":238,"date":"2013-03-18T13:49:08","date_gmt":"2013-03-18T21:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/cafesci\/?p=238"},"modified":"2013-03-18T13:49:08","modified_gmt":"2013-03-18T21:49:08","slug":"march-cafe-scientifique-with-ian-bushfield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/cafesci\/2013\/03\/18\/march-cafe-scientifique-with-ian-bushfield\/","title":{"rendered":"March Caf\u00e9 Scientifique with Ian Bushfield"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Caf\u00e9 Scientifiquers, our next caf\u00e9 will happen on<strong> Tuesday March 26th, 7:30pm at The Railway Club<\/strong>.\u00a0 Our speaker for the evening will be <strong>Ian Bushfield<\/strong>, the executive director of the British Columbia Humanist Association and\u00a0a passionate advocate for science outreach and education.\u00a0 The details of his talk are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">Weighing Paper With Lasers<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Until the 1990s, a narrow band of radiation in the far-infrared had remained largely unexplored.\u00a0Terahertz radiation&#8217;s unique interaction with water molecules and weak interaction with most plastic and fabrics make it an ideal probe for a wide range of applications, from security scanners to death rays. One area of interest is in product testing and quality control. In this talk, Ian Bushfield\u00a0will describe his masters of physics work in developing a technique to use terahertz radiation to obtain the thickness, weight, and water content of paper, for application in paper manufacturing. These non-contact sensors offer industry a way to improve accuracy and production speed by replacing sensors that rely on physical\u00a0contact with paper reams.
