Our speaker for the evening will be\u00a0<strong>Dr. Navin Ramankutty<\/strong>,\u00a0a Professor of Global Food Security and Sustainability at UBC. The title of his talk is:<\/p>\n<p><b>A Framework for Understanding Why Food Security Discussions are Contentious<\/b><\/p>\n<p>There is a contentious\u00a0debate regarding the best approach to achieving food security in an\u00a0environmentally\u00a0sustainable and socially just manner. Some advocate for new\u00a0technological systems, such as genetic modification or\u00a0vertical farming, while\u00a0others argue for organic agricuture or local food systems. Still others argue\u00a0that agriculture\u00a0does not need a revolution and that we simply need to improve\u00a0current farming practices. Even the overall\u00a0objectives are unclear, with some\u00a0arguing that we need to double food production by 2050 while others suggest\u00a0that\u00a0we already have enough food on this planet to feed 10 billion. In this\u00a0talk, I will use an assessment framework to\u00a0explore the available evidence\u00a0supporting or opposing the various claims about the most sustainable way to\u00a0farm on\u00a0our planet.
