{"id":398,"date":"2016-10-05T09:57:50","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T17:57:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/cafesci\/?p=398"},"modified":"2016-10-05T09:57:50","modified_gmt":"2016-10-05T17:57:50","slug":"october-cafe-scientifique-with-ting-wu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/cafesci\/2016\/10\/05\/october-cafe-scientifique-with-ting-wu\/","title":{"rendered":"October Caf\u00e9 Scientifique with Ting Wu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Caf\u00e9 Scientifiquers, we are pleased\u00a0to announce that this month&#8217;s event will be a collaboration with the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG).\u00a0 The caf\u00e9 will be held on\u00a0<strong>Tuesday October 18th, 7:30pm<\/strong>\u00a0in the back room at\u00a0<strong>Yagger&#8217;s Downtown<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>433 W Pender. \u00a0Please note that this date is one week earlier than usual to coincide with the ASHG Annual Meeting. \u00a0Our speaker for the evening will be\u00a0<strong>Dr. Ting Wu<\/strong>, from the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. The title of her talk is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the intersection of Space and Genetics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ting (C.-ting) Wu, Ph.D., is a Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School. She is also the Director of the Consortium for Space Genetics, the Director of the Personal Genetics Education (pgEd.org) Project, and a recipient of an NIH Director&#8217;s Pioneer Award. Her laboratory investigates how chromosome organization influences genome function, inventing and applying technologies for imaging the genome as well as studying how a very puzzling set of sequences, called ultraconserved elements (UCEs), have managed to resist change for a stunning 300 million years. These studies have led her group to consider the potential of their findings for protecting astronauts from the extreme conditions of long-term travel in space.
