For my final project in this course I chose to investigate mental health emergencies in Toronto, Ontario.
In this project I seek to answer the following questions:
- What variables have a relationship with mental health and addiction related hospitalizations/emergency department visits in Toronto, ON?
- Are there neighbourhoods in Toronto, ON that are at risk of higher mental health and addiction related hospitalizations/emergency department visits?
- Is there fragmentation of mental health resource facilities within Toronto?
To do this I use the following methodologies:
- Correlation Analysis and Exploratory Regressions
- Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis
- Spatial Autocorrelation of the OLS residuals
- Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) analysis
- A brief network analysis to investigate hospital service areas
Notable findings include:
- Concentrations of resource facilities are found downtown
- There are significant relationships between mental health and addiction related hospitalizations, and emergency department visits and the 5 explanatory variables
- The east-side of Toronto is at a disadvantage, as mental health and addiction organizations are sparse and hospitals are very far away which indicates fragmentation of facilities
