Do you know where the worlds biggest landfill is?

To my surprise, the world’s largest landfill is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and is known as the “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.

Approximate Figures:
– Contains 3.5 million tons of trash
– 80% of the trash is plastic
– The garbage patch is roughly twice the size of Texas

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch was brought to my attention after reading an article on Roz Savage.  Roz Savage is the first women to row across the Pacific Ocean and in addition, has rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, and plans to row across the Indian Ocean.  On her adventure across the Pacific she was shocked to see all the garbage and is now rowing to raise awareness about environmental issues.  For more information visit her website.

Regarding all the plastic found in the ocean, I believe we should work towards using an alternative material for packaging goods.  I am not sure what eco-friendly alternatives exist but if you know any feel free to share!
