Are you a heritage learner of Cantonese in Canada?

Are you a heritage learner of Cantonese in Canada?

To understand and to examine the roles of perceptions of identities, language ideologies, and learner trajectories in relation to Cantonese learning of heritage learners in Canada, we would like to invite you to participate in a research study by completing a survey if you meet the following criteria:

  1. You were born in Canada or arrived in Canada before January 1, 2012, and
  2. You are 18 years old or above, and
  3. You are a learner of Cantonese, and
  4. At least one of your parents speaks Cantonese

Upon completion of the survey, you may be asked to participate in two individual interviews and/or to join up to two focus group meetings with the researcher to share your experiences and perceptions of learning Cantonese as a heritage language. During the interview, you will be asked to comment on your language background, learning experience, and perception of your identity and heritage Cantonese language learning. The interviews and/or the focus group meeting will each last approximately an hour. If the interview is on Zoom, you can log in using only a nickname or a substitute name or research code given ahead of time by the researcher, and you can turn off your camera. With your permission, the interview will be audio/video-recorded. In order to acknowledge the time you have taken to be involved in this project and defray the costs of transportation (if necessary), each participant will receive a gift card in the amount of $25 after each interview or focus group session.
