Hi everyone!
My name is Carol. In 2015, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese Literature from Capital Normal University in Beijing, China. Following my graduation, I worked as a Chinese Teacher with Hua Jia Di Experimental Primary School for four years. Since my university days, it has been my dream to combine my interests in Education and Computer Science to make a difference in the lives of children. I hence applied for the BCS program at UBC and returned to school in 2021 as a second-degree student.
Studying at UBC has been the most adventurous thing in my life, especially for a woman in her thirties who has little experience in computer science but working hard towards being an expert. However, I started to learn computer programming courses while studying at the university, such as Python. For me, the learning process was enjoyable due to my interest, so I kept doing it when I worked as a Chinese Teacher. My four years of work with Hua Jia Di Primary School have made me understand firmly that information technology has become an integral part of daily education, from preparing the teaching materials to communicating with students and their parents. Besides, one of my students participated in a robot programming project group. He often shared his experience in this project with me and invited me to their project exhibition. It also made me have a craving for knowledge of computer science.
This is my first year at UBC BCS. I hope I can make great progress in the next two or three years and become an excellent software engineer in the future! My ultimate goal is to become a well-equipped IT teacher working on the frontline of teaching new generations of Chinese students. I also wish to refine my Computer Science education, human-computer interaction, and vision and graphics research.
Best,
Carol
