A statement from the CASCA 2024 Conference Local Organizing Committee in our support for student protestors<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

This conference will take place during a time when student encampments and the People\u2019s University for Gaza is becoming a growing movement on campuses across Canada and elsewhere. Students are taking powerful and important action to speak up in solidarity for the Palestinian people and in protest of Israeli state violence and genocide that is reaching new heights of intensity with the latest assault on Rafah. Students, including students at neighboring Thompson Rivers University, are demanding that public universities divest from Israeli investments that are fueling the military or are complicit in settler colonial violence against Palestinians.\u00a0 UBC Vancouver, University of Victoria, and Vancouver Island University are also part of the swell in BC of student mobilization against the assault on Gaza.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>We know that most anthropologists at this conference teach and take up decolonial and anti-colonial theories, methods, and practices in our work. This past March, the <\/span>CASCA Executive denounced the dismissal of anthropologist Ghassan Hage<\/span><\/a>, falsely accused of antisemitism, by the Max Planck Society for making public statements about Palestine\/Israel. At the AAA\/CASCA meetings this past November in Toronto, <\/span>Anthropologists for the Boycott of Israeli Institutions (AnthroBoycott)<\/span><\/a> and their supporters carried out several events including a protest at Toronto\u2019s US Consulate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Within this context\u2014of anthropologists doing decolonial work in our own research and teaching, our organization taking a stance against silencing of public discourse on Israel\/Palestine, and thousands of anthropologists making efforts to end the oppression and violence against Palestinians in Gaza\u2014the CASCA 2024 LOC stands with student pro-Palestine activists on this campus. We also make it clear that we oppose antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. Our support is ratified by a recent UBCO Senate resolution that \u201cSupports all those who peacefully oppose this war, including those in Israel who have gone to the streets at great personal risk to protest the invasion\u201d [read the full resolution here<\/a>].<\/span> We appreciate the efforts of conference attendees to stand in support of the student protestors as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

An encampment in protest of the complicity of UBC in the Israeli genocide in Gaza was established the morning of May 13. Attendees, the campus community, and UBCO security should be aware that the student protestors have our full support.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cette conf\u00e9rence aura lieu \u00e0 un moment o\u00f9 les campements d\u2019\u00e9tudiant\u00b7e\u00b7s et l’Universit\u00e9 populaire pour Gaza deviennent un mouvement de plus en plus important sur les campus \u00e0 travers le Canada et ailleurs. Les d\u2019\u00e9tudiant\u00b7e\u00b7s prennent des mesures puissantes et importantes pour exprimer leur solidarit\u00e9 avec le peuple palestinien et protester contre la violence et le g\u00e9nocide de l’\u00c9tat isra\u00e9lien, qui atteignent de nouveaux sommets d’intensit\u00e9 avec le dernier assaut sur Rafah. Les d\u2019\u00e9tudiant\u00b7e\u00b7s , y compris ceux de l’universit\u00e9 voisine de Thompson Rivers, exigent que les universit\u00e9s publiques d\u00e9sinvestissent des investissements isra\u00e9liens qui alimentent l’arm\u00e9e ou sont complices de la violence coloniale contre les Palestiniens. L’UBC Vancouver, l’Universit\u00e9 de Victoria et l’Universit\u00e9 de l’\u00eele de Vancouver font \u00e9galement partie de la vague de mobilisation \u00e9tudiante en Colombie-Britannique contre l’assaut sur Gaza.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nous savons que la plupart des anthropologues pr\u00e9sents \u00e0 cette conf\u00e9rence enseignent et reprennent les th\u00e9ories, m\u00e9thodes et pratiques d\u00e9coloniales et anticoloniales dans leur travail. En mars dernier, l’ex\u00e9cutif de la CASCA a d\u00e9nonc\u00e9 le licenciement de l’anthropologue Ghassan Hage, faussement accus\u00e9 d’antis\u00e9mitisme<\/a> par la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Max Planck pour avoir fait des d\u00e9clarations publiques sur la Palestine\/Isra\u00ebl. Lors des r\u00e9unions de l’AAA\/CASCA en novembre dernier \u00e0 Toronto, les Anthropologues pour le boycott des institutions isra\u00e9liennes<\/a> (AnthroBoycott) et leurs sympathisants ont organis\u00e9 plusieurs \u00e9v\u00e9nements, dont une manifestation devant le consulat am\u00e9ricain de Toronto.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dans ce contexte – des anthropologues qui font un travail d\u00e9colonial dans leur propre recherche et enseignement, notre organisation qui prend position contre le silence du discours public sur Isra\u00ebl\/Palestine, et des milliers d’anthropologues qui font des efforts pour mettre fin \u00e0 l’oppression et \u00e0 la violence contre les Palestiniens \u00e0 Gaza – la CASCA 2024 LOC se tient aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s des \u00e9tudiants activistes pro-palestiniens sur ce campus. Nous affirmons \u00e9galement clairement que nous nous opposons \u00e0 l’antis\u00e9mitisme et \u00e0 toutes les formes de discrimination. Notre soutien est ratifi\u00e9 par une r\u00e9cente r\u00e9solution du S\u00e9nat de l’UBCO qui “soutient tous ceux qui s’opposent pacifiquement \u00e0 cette guerre, y compris ceux qui, en Isra\u00ebl, sont descendus dans la rue au p\u00e9ril de leur vie pour protester contre l’invasion” [lire la r\u00e9solution compl\u00e8te ici<\/a>]. Nous appr\u00e9cions les efforts des participant\u00b7e\u00b7s \u00e0 la conf\u00e9rence pour soutenir les d\u2019\u00e9tudiant\u00b7e\u00b7s protestataires.<\/span><\/p>\n
