Students are taking powerful and important action to speak up in solidarity for the Palestinian people and in protest of Israeli state violence and genocide that is reaching new heights of intensity with the latest assault on Rafah. Students, including students at neighboring Thompson Rivers University, are demanding that public universities divest from Israeli investments that are fueling the military or are complicit in settler colonial violence against Palestinians.\u00a0 UBC Vancouver, University of Victoria, and Vancouver Island University are also part of the swell in BC of student mobilization against the assault on Gaza.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We know that most anthropologists at this conference teach and take up decolonial and anti-colonial theories, methods, and practices in our work. This past March, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cas-sca.ca\/en\/casca-executive-statement-academic-freedom-antisemitism-and-the-dismissal-of-ghassan-hage-from-the-max-planck-institute-for-social-anthropology\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CASCA Executive denounced the dismissal of anthropologist Ghassan Hage<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, falsely accused of antisemitism, by the Max Planck Society for making public statements about Palestine\/Israel. At the AAA\/CASCA meetings this past November in Toronto, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthroboycott.org\/about\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anthropologists for the Boycott of Israeli Institutions (AnthroBoycott)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and their supporters carried out several events including a protest at Toronto\u2019s US Consulate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Within this context\u2014of anthropologists doing decolonial work in our own research and teaching, our organization taking a stance against silencing of public discourse on Israel\/Palestine, and thousands of anthropologists making efforts to end the oppression and violence against Palestinians in Gaza\u2014the CASCA 2024 LOC stands with student pro-Palestine activists on this campus. We also make it clear that we oppose antisemitism and all forms of discrimination. Our support is ratified by a recent UBCO Senate resolution that \u201cSupports all those who peacefully oppose this war, including those in Israel who have gone to the streets at great personal risk to protest the invasion\u201d [read <a href=\"https:\/\/scs-senate-2021.sites.olt.ubc.ca\/files\/20240425-Okanagan-Senate-Resolution.pdf\">the full resolution here<\/a>].<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> We appreciate the efforts of conference attendees to stand in support of the student protestors as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An encampment in protest of the complicity of UBC in the Israeli genocide in Gaza was established the morning of May 13.
