The multimedia projection shows animated images of star stories\u2014 alongside world-class cross-cultural music.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Media Artist and UBC Okanagan faculty Aleksandra\u00a0Dulic\u00a0and Miles Thorogood with UBC Graduate Students Jacen Dennis, Amberley John, and Emerald Holt created a multimedia presentation of animated images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The artists re-interpret the cosmological stories and oral histories from their own cultural heritages \u2014 Greek, Chinese, African, and the Indigenous&#8217; Haudenosaunee culture, and explore the meeting of cultures in their collaborative process with community members, where unique stars signifying individuals&#8217; heritage were made. This story\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">describes why\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">leaves turn red and yellow in autumn\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">indicates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that this time of year when the men should begin hunting.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this story, a Great Bear\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">kills many animals and steals food from the fields<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, making everyone scared<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Amberley reinterprets this bear as a mechanical monstrosity, reflecting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">destructive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and industry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0taking place in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">present day. In the story,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hree\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rothers share a dream in the smoke of their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fire\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and learn that they are the ones who will kill the Great Bear.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0They hunt him, and becoming afraid, the Great Bear leaps into the sky, where he is chased among the stars and around Turtle Island<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He is finally defeated, and his blood and fat\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">falls<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0back to Earth, where it stains the leaves.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0story of the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Cowherd and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Weaver Woman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has been told all over East Asia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">centerpiece of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Chinese\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Qixi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0festival, Japanese\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tanbata<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Festival, and the Korean\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chilseok<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Festival<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the night sky, the Weaver Woman is represented by the Vega star, and the Cowherd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Altair star.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">young\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">gods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the Heavens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Weaver Woman and Cowherd Man fell in love, but this love was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prohibited<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and they were separated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Cowherd\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">man was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cast down\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to earth to l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ive as a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0human<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0man<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Many years later, the Weaver Woman\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ole<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0away from the Heavens<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0down to Earth<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">she<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cowherd accidently meet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and fall in love all over again.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After further hardship<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where they are separated once more<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by the creation of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Celestial River\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Milky Way<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y are shown pity and allowed to meet once a year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the 7th day of the 7th lunar month,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a flock of magpies forms a bridge to reunite the lovers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0over the data-contrast=\"auto\">highlight<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the mythology of human desires and emotions through Heroes and Gods. We journey through the constellations of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the sea monster Cetus, the princess Andromeda, the magical wing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0horse\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pegasus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and legendary\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">slayer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of monsters Pers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">us.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Offended by claims\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">made by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andromeda\u2019s mother Cassiopeia,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Poseidon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0God of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ea<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0punished\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">her<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0family,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">demanding<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andromeda\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be sacrificed to the se<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0monster<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Cetus.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andromeda was chained to a rock<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the middle of the ocean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and just<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0before the sea monster gobbled her\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">up,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">renowned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hero\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">us\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">slayed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cetus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and unchained Andromeda<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. As well as Andromeda\u2019s story, we present\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Orpheus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">story, that of adventure, music, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">narrow escape\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the high seas. After\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">receiving the Lyre<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0from the eagle Aquila<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Orpheus joins the Argonauts on the seas and when the crew encounters the Sirens, he is able to save the day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with his beautiful music<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57\" class=\"wp-image-57 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/celestialbodies\/files\/2021\/01\/African-Story-Image2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"African Story Image\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-57\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">African Story Image<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he African story &#8216;Why\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Sun, the Moon, and the Stars live in the Sky?&#8217; is a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n exciting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">journey about Owen the Sun and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0his wife<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uki<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Moon, who are forced to flee into the sky to escape their drowning\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">by the Sea King Okun\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on earth.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After a fateful visit with the Sea King, Owen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0set<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0quest to build a palace large enough to accommodate the e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ntirety\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of the Sea King<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Okun\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s vast oceanic kingdom and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">retinu<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. As\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sea levels begin to rise, and Owen the Sun and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uki<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the Moon are forced to climb atop the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir newly built<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0palace\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">flee into the sky<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Uki<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0swear<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0she will never leave<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The dynamic story brings to life the fascinating history of West Africa\u2019s finest instruments, such as the Talking Drums, Djembe<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shekere<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">expressed by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the many dancing stars<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0vibrant attire.
