Nike’s communication through LeBron James

LeBron signed lifetime deal with Nike. It is the first time ever in Nike’s history. The reason is not only because LeBron is one of the greatest players in the world but he is also very humble off the court. According to Lebron’s lifetime deal “We can confirm that we have agreed to a lifetime relationship with LeBron that provides significant value to our business, brand and shareholders,” Nike said in a statement. Nike believes that LeBron’s brand has great potential to keep growing the business for Nike shoes.

Why is LeBron? Well, Kobe also has huge impact on Nike shoes but Kobe also signed with Adidas when he was young in the league. Nike choose LeBron even before he entered into NBA, and they did a great job pick on LeBron, because LeBron is doing great both on and off the court. LeBron is the one guy since day1 with Nike and he working very hard on the court and being a great role model to the world. Nike wants to promote the relationship between each other and build a very loyalty program too.  People love to buy LeBron’s brand not only because they are good products but because also Nike promotes it very well and LeBron plays very well. The biggest risk is if LeBron injury himself or he has some negative public effects, but apparently, LeBron never really injury during his career and he is a FAMILY man and never against medias in public. Therefore, even though he is 31 years old, he still has great influence on Nike’s basketball business.

Nike also always brings LeBron to do charity programs such as basketball clinic or training camp, and promote his childhood story all over the world. Nike wants to let people know this is called giving back which helps Nike building stronger relationship in communities. Moreover, people’s feedback always very positive to this, because they love to see this hero being nice to them. If you work hard enough, you will get reward.

Being a good role player on a team

We lost qatar final when we play against No.1 seed in the national championship tournament in 2016. As a team member, I witnessed how great is a team. We lost in overtime but we fighted until the last minute and we pretty much gave all on the court.  We made some accomplishments that year but never the best. As No.8 seed facing No.1 seed in the country, it was not easy. However, we only have one goal is that get the championship for UBC since 1972.

We have to prove a lot of things in 2017 that we are the best men’s basketball team in Canada. According to Organizational Behaviour by Langton et al. (2016), “A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable, team members share leadership and the team’s measure of effectiveness is the team’s outcomes and goals, not individual outcomes and goals.”(p.204) We have one mission that is the national championship. Everyone contributes their part into the team, so do I. Walking into the gym and get shots up every morning or evening, motivating others get extra workouts and helping each other on the court and off the court. I am not a super basketball star but I have a clearly goal that is being a great role player on this team. Encouraging my teammates on the court and motivating myself to get better for next year, that is my job.

This is not only about basketball, but this is also guide myself to be a better person and a better athlete. Understanding what I bring to a team which helps me in my future career too. This journey will help myself to stay strong and being the best I can be.

Self-motivate is the key

The moment that this came out, I simply just did not have any words, any exclamations, or any reaction. I was in shock. My brain was processing what my eyes just saw. I tried to scream, yell, shout. I wanted to let it all out. But I could not. I was in awe. In disbelief. In a dream.

I am extremely grateful and tremendously happy that I could earn this player spot on the team at one of the best universities in the world. 4 years and I’ve been to the team tryouts 5 different time, but I never wanted to quit on my dream. I never gave up. Quitting was not an option for me. This was my passion. My internal desire to chase the dream, and I have passion about it. It was my love and my life. Even though many people told me that I should quit and give up, I told myself: Charles. How about try another time? Try one more time. Every day I try to try make one more shoot at the gym, try to do more bench press at the weight room. Regardless of all the people who didn’t believe in me and told me that I could not make it, that I could not succeed, I kept on believing, believing, believing. If anything, they were a motivation to me in a sense. They made me want it even more. I learn things from people in good ways.

I came from China 5 years ago, from a completely different culture and background than any of you guys here in Canada. I wish that I could finish school at 3:00pm like here and do whatever I love to do, but that is not how it is in China. There, life consists of waking up at 5:30am, going to class at 6:30am all the way until 9:30pm only with a 2-hour lunch break. That is 13 hours, 12-14 classes per day and school only allowed students come back home once (2 days) a month or twice (2nights 3 days) a month during grade 10-grade 12 which made me like machine. We only had 2 Physical Education classes twice a week and the maximum duration of PE was 40 mins, in which I could only enjoy 40 mins basketball. I got suspended for 2 weeks from school because school director caught me using my lunch break to play basketball instead of studying or napping.
Finally, I joined the school team when I was grade11 and we finished 7th place in the provincial tournament of the Shandong Province. That is when I realized how much I loved being a part of a basketball team, how good I felt when I was with my teammates and coaches. Ever since, I have loved basketball as well as team sports. I love when we do something for each other and later feeling great about it. Making my family and friends proud is a wonderful thing in life and always made me feel very special.
Coach Hanson once texted me and said … Sport teaches you a lot of valuable life skills; team work, loyalty, goal setting, desire, passion, commitment, and dedication. It’s the journey that I need to enjoy. The drive to make me a better player and better person. There is no guarantees in life so all that I can do is strive to be the best I can be. Keep striving, Charles!
It means a lot to myself. I will keep working hard and try to be the best I can be and I will never quit in getting better. This means more than basketball, it is bigger than basketball itself. I have to appreciate these things, which will help me a lot in my future career too.
