Kevin Hanson, head coach of the UBC Men’s basketball team. He has been coaching UBC for about 17 years. He made a lot of progress and obtained many accolades at UBC building tremendous value to this program. From the players coaches, alumni and the rest of the UBC family, respect is always demonstrated. We push and care about each other on the court and off the court. For example, after seeing our coach hug a player after missing two free throws changed my perspective towards him and basketball, as they could have won the game. I gained a lot of respect for my coach as this shows what our team culture is truly about. Sometimes basketball is not just about winning, we can learn a lot of experience and life skills under a successful program. During team practices, we try to be the best we can be and try to win national title for our program. Moreover, we are not only compete to win games but we also care about each others, we want to each other do well in the future and giving back to the program. Helping each other to be the best we can and go hard on each other on the court because we know life will not be easy as well. This is our team culture.
According to Organizational Behavior by Langton et al. (2016) Henry Mintzberg said, “Culture is the soul of the organization—the beliefs and values, and how they are manifested. I think of the structure as the skeleton, and as the flesh and blood. And culture is the soul that holds the thing together and gives it life force. (p348)
Under UBC MBB’s value and our team culture, we believe doing little things will matter, such as learning, eating and training. This is how we become a better team and stronger individuals, always appreciate people’s support and compete level on the court.. Through many practices, I understand learning is a daily experience, but it also is a life mission. Not only about basketball, but I also understand all these things put together will help me to become a better person and better athlete.
