Additional Blog: #11 U.N. vs ARC

“If  the United Nations was fully funded why would we need the Arc or social enterprise?”

United Nations is an international organization which commits to maintaining international peace, develops friendly relations among nations and promotes social progress, better living standards and human rights. On the other hand, the Arc aims to build “an arc that facilitates a genuine two-way exchange of knowledge and business skill.” Therefore from these two differing objectives/purpose statement alone, we can see that even if UN is  to be become fully funded and they are more likely to achieve all their goals, there would still be certain gaps in which the only the Arc initiative or other social Enterprise would do.

As the UN regulates over 51 countries to international peace and  security, it would be hard for UN to keep in track of all societal issues, and often events held by the UN are more large-scale and generic: they may not specially target small villages which are in dire need of aid. Yet, some social entrepreneurs do target these small scale needs thus this is another reason the Arc initiative/ other social enterprises are needed even if UN becomes fully funded.

One of the most important reason for social enterprises to co-exist with UN  is that social enterprises are the ones innovating: without social entrepreneur,  micro-financing would never have been found and millions of women in LEDCs would still be in great poverty. UN would not come up with new ideas like that. Thus, it is important that we have innovators who would keep coming up with ideas which could solve poverty and raise standard of living in a whole new way.
