Culinary competitions are open to all my culinary students, they an extra curricular activity that in involve students working / practicing after school and various competitions.
Traditionally in the Surrey school district there was two fun competitions each year:
First semester – The Ginger Bread Competition (December)
Second semester – The Chili Competitions (May)
They are fun competitions due to the fact:
- Any one can participate – little or no prerequisite skills required, the Chef will guide and coach as needed. All students need is a good attitude, willingness to lean, give up a little bit of their time.
- Students can work in teams – witch mean less pressure and anxiety to preform individually
- Little or no cost – the teaching kitchen sponsors students by providing food and equipment needed to compete.
- Students have an opportunity to meet other culinary students form other culinary programs from around the Provence as well as gain more culinary skills, have fun and feel that they are apart of a school team.
For students who desire to take their culinary experience to a higher level there is a national competition held each called Skills Canada. Spaces are limited so only a few students can compete, generally top students form a culinary program. There is a lot more pressure placed on these student competitors, therefore it is not for every student, as well there is a lot more individual training that takes place.
