Hello site trailblazers and educational leaders. My name is Chelsey Kolenda and I am a current Elementary Education student at UBC. I am completing my practicum in an active and wonderful grade 6/7 combined class, and will be doing a second experiential experience called Community Field Experience in a creative and caring Grade 2 class. Before entering this program, I worked as a specialty summer day camp leader and spring instructor, where I was able to engage children ranging in age from 3 to 12 in art, drama, and nature-based experiences. I have also worked at a performing arts studio called The Drama Class, teaching kids ages 7 to 12 the basics of drama and watching them shine on stage. I am now extending these skills into directing a full length show. Through all of these opportunities and now as I am becoming the teacher I have always dreamed of being, I prioritize building relationships between my students and myself and between the classroom community as a whole, empowering each child to reach their fullest potential, engaging every student in active and creative learning experiences, and extending the students’ empathy and drive to make a real impact in the world. I cannot wait to continue building my teacher identity as I move through this experience and beyond.
