A new government sponsored research report Conducted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xmu.edu.cn\/english\/\">Xiamen U<\/a> happens to be released, but only on 1970 to 2008: &#8220;\u4ece\u4e0a\u4e16\u7eaa\uff17\uff10\u5e74\u4ee3\u5230\uff12\uff10\uff10\uff17\uff0d\uff12\uff10\uff10\uff18\u5e74\u95f4\uff0c\u4ece\u4e2d\u56fd\u524d\u5f80\u4e16\u754c\u5404\u5730\u7684\u79fb\u6c11\u8d85\u8fc7\uff11\uff10\uff10\uff10\u4e07\u4eba\u3002\u5176\u4e2d\uff0c\u6765\u81ea\u6e2f\u6fb3\u53f0\u5730\u533a\u7684\u7ea6\uff11\uff16\uff10\uff0d\uff11\uff17\uff10\u4e07\uff0c\u6765\u81ea\u4e2d\u56fd\u5927\u9646\u7ea6\uff18\uff10\uff10\u591a\u4e07\u3002\u524d\u5f80\u53d1\u8fbe\u56fd\u5bb6\u7684\u4e2d\u56fd\u65b0\u79fb\u6c11\u8fd1\uff17\uff10\uff10\u4e07\uff0c\u524d\u5f80\u53d1\u5c55\u4e2d\u56fd\u5bb6\u7684\u6709\uff13\uff10\uff10\u591a\u4e07\u3002 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/overseas\/2011-08\/17\/c_121871238.htm\">Another study<\/a> estimates that a total of 45 million Chinese have emigrated in the last 30 years. It&#8217;s an estimate probably because it&#8217;s more difficult for the government to track emigrants than immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s funny that both studies are sponsored by the same government agency (qiaoban). The new study conducted by Xiamen U. is probably more accurate. I met Dr. Zhang at last fall&#8217;s conference in Xiamen, and she is coming to <a href=\"http:\/\/wcilcos.library.ubc.ca\/\">WCILCOS<\/a> this May. I can learn more details  of the survey from her in person. Interesting topic. I imagine the number of emigrants prior to the open door policy is probably very tiny (not to count the millions who went to Taiwan in 1948 and 1949).<\/p>\n<p>This reminds me an earlier reference request on China&#8217;s emigration policy in 1956.
