Unit 4 Self-Assessment Reflection

Throughout the ENGL 301 course, I have identified several strengths and weaknesses in both my learning process and assignments.

In terms of my learning process, I have found that I excel in time management and organization. However, as English is my second language and I am still new to Canadian culture, I sometimes struggle with language barriers and cultural differences. I am working on improving my language skills and cultural knowledge through practice and research to overcome these challenges. Additionally, I recognize the importance of staying up-to-date with the constantly evolving technology in the IT industry, and I plan to continue learning and expanding my knowledge to stay competitive in the field.

Regarding my assignments, I have discovered that my writing skills have improved significantly throughout the course. I am able to communicate technical information effectively and clearly, and I have become more confident in my writing abilities. However, I have also recognized a tendency to overlook the tone of my documents. To address this, I plan to revise my work more carefully and consider how my writing appears to readers.

My skills and strengths as a student support my future career goals in the IT industry by providing me with the necessary technical writing skills for success. Specifically, I plan to pursue a career as a software engineer, and the skills I have developed in this course will be valuable in communicating technical information to clients and colleagues. Additionally, I found that learning how to write memorandums was particularly useful as it is a common form of communication. Being able to write clear and concise memos will allow me to effectively communicate with team members and superiors in a professional manner. I look forward to utilizing this skill in my future career.

In conclusion, the ENGL 301 course has provided me with valuable insights into my strengths and weaknesses in both my learning process and assignments. I plan to use this information to continue improving and to support my future career goals in the IT industry. I would like to thank Professor Erika for her guidance and support throughout the course.

Reflection : Web folio

Creating my web folio was a challenging yet ultimately rewarding experience. Despite some initial uncertainty about how to start and organize it, I was able to gain a better understanding of what content to include by reviewing my past assignments and peer feedback.

I learned the importance of choosing a visually appealing and easy-to-navigate layout for my web folio, as well as incorporating engaging images and graphics. I was also able to focus on my writing, using simple and professional language to make it easy to understand and approachable.

Overall, creating my web folio allowed me to reflect on my technical writing skills and the progress I’ve made throughout the course. It was fulfilling to showcase my work and gain new insights into areas where I can improve. I’m excited to see how my web folio will help me in my future career as a technical writer.

Unit 3.3 – Reflection

Unit Three was dedicated to improving our business writing skills and learning how to write a formal report. Throughout the unit, I gained valuable knowledge on how to write in a professional tone with a “You-Attitude”. This technique involves taking the reader’s perspective into consideration and showing respect while staying positive. These skills are essential for effective communication in any business writing situation.

One of the major assignments in this unit was writing a formal report draft. For my report, I chose to address food insecurity and promote sustainable, affordable food practices at UBC. To gather information for my report, I conducted surveys and interviews with students at UBC. It was a fun experience to collect data and analyze the results. However, it was also sad to discover that there has been a significant increase in the number of students who use the food donation program, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This made me realize the importance of addressing food insecurity at UBC and promoting sustainable, affordable food practices.

Writing the formal report draft was a time-consuming and challenging process, but it helped me to develop my research and analysis skills. I learned how to organize and synthesize data effectively, and how to present it in a concise and clear manner. Peer review was also a valuable part of the process, as it allowed me to receive feedback from my peers and learn from their writing.

Overall, Unit Three has helped me to improve my writing skills and develop a better understanding of how to write a formal report. I am excited to continue learning and applying these skills in future units and in my future career.
