Unit 3.3 – Reflection

Unit Three was dedicated to improving our business writing skills and learning how to write a formal report. Throughout the unit, I gained valuable knowledge on how to write in a professional tone with a “You-Attitude”. This technique involves taking the reader’s perspective into consideration and showing respect while staying positive. These skills are essential for effective communication in any business writing situation.

One of the major assignments in this unit was writing a formal report draft. For my report, I chose to address food insecurity and promote sustainable, affordable food practices at UBC. To gather information for my report, I conducted surveys and interviews with students at UBC. It was a fun experience to collect data and analyze the results. However, it was also sad to discover that there has been a significant increase in the number of students who use the food donation program, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This made me realize the importance of addressing food insecurity at UBC and promoting sustainable, affordable food practices.

Writing the formal report draft was a time-consuming and challenging process, but it helped me to develop my research and analysis skills. I learned how to organize and synthesize data effectively, and how to present it in a concise and clear manner. Peer review was also a valuable part of the process, as it allowed me to receive feedback from my peers and learn from their writing.

Overall, Unit Three has helped me to improve my writing skills and develop a better understanding of how to write a formal report. I am excited to continue learning and applying these skills in future units and in my future career.

Unit 2.3 – Reflection

Unit 2 Reflection Blog: Exploring Professional Networking and Collaborative Learning

The process of researching how to create a LinkedIn profile has been a fun experience.  I understand the importance of showcasing my skills and accomplishments in a humble yet appealing way, and it has been a valuable lesson in balancing personal expression with professionalism.

Brainstorming and preparing the report proposal and outline has been an engaging and educational process. I am pleased with my progress on the report so far and feel that my ideas are well-organized and on track. However, I do have some concerns about how my investigation will come together as a formal report. I hope to gain more clarity and confidence as I continue working on it.

During the peer review process for my partner’s proposal, I learned a great deal about different perspectives and approaches to writing. It was fascinating to see how others organized their thoughts and ideas, and it made me realize that there is no one-size-fits-all structure for a formal report. This understanding has helped me become more flexible and creative in my writing.

Reflecting on the peer review process as a whole, I have gained valuable insights into my writing and reading skills. Reviewing my team’s writing forum has been an eye-opening experience, and I have been pleasantly surprised by my partner’s work. The peer review process has not only helped me improve my writing but also broadened my perspective on collaboration and the importance of constructive feedback.

In conclusion, I am grateful for the learning opportunities provided by Unit 2 and look forward to applying the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to future projects and collaborations.

Unit 1:3 – Reflection

Unit 1 Reflection

Unit 1 of English 301:

Technical Writing was designed to introduce students to the course and its various components, including the platform, tools, and materials. Students were given the assignment of defining a complex term in their field of study through three definitions that progressed in complexity. This was followed by a peer-review process where students worked together to review and provide feedback on each other’s work. The final step involved revising the work based on the feedback received during the peer-review process.

This was followed by a peer-review process where students worked together to review and provide feedback on each other’s work. The final step involved revising the work based on the feedback received during the peer-review process.

The original writing process was a challenge. Balancing enough details to convey the meaning of the term, while not boring for the reader was difficult The peer-review process was a valuable experience as it allowed me to read and review another student’s work and learn from their writing style and techniques. I also critically analyze and make suggestions to improve my partner’s work, which helped me improve my own critical thinking and editing skills.

The self-editing process was an eye-opener as I received feedback on my work, which allowed me to reflect on my current writing skills and identify areas for improvement. I learned that editing is a crucial part of the writing process, and it helps to refine one’s work and make it more concise and readable. Furthermore, I appreciate the importance of considering the audience and purpose of writing, as well as ensuring that the writing is clear and concise.

Overall, Unit One has been a valuable learning experience that has taught me the importance of writing, peer reviewing, and editing. I have learned new skills such as writing in a professional manner, considering the audience and purpose of writing, and providing constructive criticism. I am excited to continue improving my writing skills and work with my team to produce high-quality work in the upcoming units.

ENGL 301 Students
University of British Columbia

Dear English 301 Students:

I am writing this letter to express my desire to join a professional writing team for this semester. I am confident that my skills and professional interests would complement those of the team, and I am eager to collaborate with a group.

Currently, I am pursuing a second degree in Computer Science at UBC in Canada. My prior degree was in Advanced Material Engineering in Korea, and I have also gained valuable experience through working as an engineer and researcher at several companies in Korea, where I had opportunities to develop my business communication skills.

I am interested in utilizing my knowledge of technology to enhance my writing, and I believe that my background in materials engineering and computer science will add unique perspectives to the team. I have strong research skills and am able to effectively organize and analyze information. Regarding my writing skills, I consider myself to be a clear and concise writer with a good eye for detail. Also, I have experience in a business communication setting, which I think will be beneficial for the team. However, English is my second language, and I may struggle with expressing my thoughts with the same fluency as native speakers. But I am constantly working on improving my language skills.

In terms of work habits, I am highly organized, efficient, and able to meet deadlines. My learning philosophy is based on continuous improvement, and I believe that there is always room to grow and learn. I am excited about the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with experienced writers on the team.

I would be happy to be considered for a position on the team. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Chohyeon Kim
