After reading Marino J. Dasmarinas’ blog “Do you have a credit conscious leader/manager?” It reminds me of the research I saw in Chapter 11 of the textbook, that among 700 employees participate in the study, many of them believe their managers do not give credit when it’s due and do not keep their promises.
It is pathetic when you think of a situation that you have been hard working for a long time and waited to hand in your final results with excitements and a sense of achievement. And your boss shared your work with everyone without crediting you, which is basically claiming the work was all his or hers. There will be no employees who would not be averse to what their boss has done, but many of them choose to complain afterward or keep silent for the fear of confronting their bosses.
However, “Complaining is generally a weak, self-destructing strategy”, which sours your relationship with your boss immediately. Moreover, due to lack of motivation, you may easily get distracted from doing any jobs that your boss assigned to you, which may affect your overall accomplishments. If you fall into this trap, you are putting yourself in a dangerous position in the workplace.
Then how should we tackle this? Weigh the severity of the situation and speak up when it is necessary. Remember, you always have the right to protect your accomplishment from stealing by others, even though that is your boss.
As for leaders, in order to show respect to the hard work you subordinates have done and motivate them to keep doing a great job efficiently, being credit conscious and giving appropriate rewards are vital to the effective leadership.
