Source text:

“Eco-certification is legitimized in part by a standard narrative portraying the state as ineffective with respect to protecting vulnerable subjects, leaving certification agents in a position of trustee, acting on behalf of these subjects.”

Vandergeest and Unno (2012) “A new extraterritoriality? Aquaculture certification, sovereignty, and empire”. Political Geography, doi:10.1016/j.polgeo.2012.05.005

Writer’s text:

Theorists such as Hatanaka (2005) and Vandergeest and Unno (2012) argue that certification standards such as fair trade are developed in the North and subsequently imposed on Southern producers with little regard to local context or needs. There are two aspects to the notion of eco-imperialism. (p.6)

Writer’s comment:

It’s actually a paraphrase of somebody’s paraphrase of the idea. When I do research, if I find things that are cited in other papers, generally I will go to that paper and read it all but if like in this case I don’t have the time, I still cite them directly so I paraphrase that and then cite the paper itself.
