Meet the Team!
Hey there! My name is Matteo Agnoloni and I will be the main blogger for this community service project. I am currently in my second year of civil engineering at the University of British Columbia. At this point in time, I have a keen interest in structural engineering, but I have a very open mind and I am willing try out all kinds of disciplines. Outside of school, my main hobby is playing soccer. I have played at quite high levels throughout my soccer career and I am currently playing in the Men’s Premier League. I am also a soccer coach, coaching summer camps and youth teams, as well as supervising less experienced coaches. I love to ski during the winter and go for hikes during the summer.
I am a part of a team of five other members. We have only known each other as a group for about two weeks, but I can already tell that it will be a fun and rewarding experience working with these individuals. We are all hard working, determined, and passionate about engineering. I will now introduce my team mates and give you a little background information about them.
EVAN ELDER
The first member of our group is Evan Elder, a nineteen-year-old studying civil engineering. Evan completed his first year of studies at the University of Canterbury in his hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand before transferring. While there, he worked as an Engineering Assistant for Tonkin and Taylor, an engineering consultancy firm tasked with carrying out the geotechnical investigations for the Christchurch Earthquake Recovery Authority. Evan’s interest in engineering revolves around environmental issues, sustainability issues and particularly humanitarian issues – he has been involved in these fields before and hopes to continue to be so in the future. Outside of engineering, Evan enjoys running, skiing and hiking.
KYLE LANG
Kyle Lang is a second year civil engineering student at UBC. He was born in Edmonton, but has lived in British Columbia for more than 10 years. On his free time he enjoys skiing and snowboarding in Whistler, hiking, traveling, hanging out with friends, as well as watching hockey and football. His interests are in structural engineering, specifically tower and earthquake engineering. In 2010 he completed a mathematics degree, from UBC, and decided to take a year off and think about which direction he would like to go in life. Ultimately he decided to further his education by pursuing a civil engineering degree, and one day hopes to work in the earthquake-engineering field here in Vancouver.
ADAM VAUGHAN
Adam Vaughan is a mature student who was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. He is a graduate of the graphic and visual design program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and worked in various capacities in that field for 8 years. Desiring a change of career, he set his targets on becoming a civil engineer. Now in his second year, Adam has a keen interest in many specializations within the field of civil engineering including geotechnical, structural, transportation and construction management. Adam is hoping to narrow his focus through co-op experience and classwork in the coming years, and looks forward to working on interesting projects in the future.
JOE PRICE
Then we have Joe Price. He is a second year Civil Engineering student at UBC. Joe started his post-secondary career at UBC Okanagan last year, and transferred to the Vancouver campus for the rest of his degree. Within Civil, Joe’s interests are in the field of sustainability in building design. Working on this project is exciting for him because it is all about sustainability!
YICHENG SUN
YiCheng Sun is the final member of the group. He is nineteen years old, and was born in Shanghai, China. YiCheng immigrated to Vancouver about six years ago, and is currently studying civil engineering at the University of British Columbia. YiCheng’s interested branch within civil engineering is project management. He wishes to pursue a career in real estate development in the future. Outside of engineering study, YiCheng enjoys graphic designing and painting. He has been studying and practicing a variety of art styles since the age of eight, ranging from ancient Chinese calligraphy to modern Cubism style painting. He wishes to use his artistic background to his advantage in his future career.
The mentor
I am Amin Aziznia, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of chemical and biological engineering. I am very happy to have this opportunity to be involved in this course, as a mentor, and also a friend of the team. As a person who is at the end of his academic career, I can say learning engineering outside of the class rooms is extremely important and will make a huge difference in our future career. Thus, the CSL is a great opportunity for students to develop many of their professional skills. You will be faced with many real word challenges that an engineer must cope with. I wish the team success in their career and ask you to always remember: “Enthusiasm spells the difference between mediocrity and accomplishment.:
Nice to meet everyone. Thanks for the intros!
