Week 1

We are a team of five Civil Engineering Students in CIVL 400 who are excited to work with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and Tsawwassen First Nation. Our Clients are interested in providing affordable housing for First Nation members. In this Project our task is to design a sustainable project plan that is feasible.

On January 14th we arranged a meeting with the APSC CBEL Officer, Ara Beittoei to get our clients contact information and some additional information about the community Partners. After meeting with Ara, we created some initial deadlines and assigned tasks to different people in our group; Client liaison, web blogger, and class liaison roles were delegated.

At this moment, we are trying to arrange a meeting with our clients to get more detailed information about their expectations and our responsibilities. Here is the introduction on team members:

  • Hello, my name is Justin Brown. I am a third year Civil engineering student. I decided to pick a Community Based Experiential Learning (CBEL) group for Civl 400 because of the great experience I had in CIVL 202 with the Pacific Streamkeepers Federation.Outside of school, I enjoy playing sports and staying active outdoors. I used to play competitive hockey and now my newest passion is triathlon.I’m looking forward to working with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and Tsawwassen First Nation this upcoming term. I’m sure this will be a very challenging and rewarding project
  • My name is Jess Herman and I am also a third year Civil Engineering student at UBC. I choose Civil Engineering initially to provide a foundation for possible architecture and design career paths. For this reason, I thought the Community Based Experiential Learning (CBEL) project would be a good opportunity to further explore this field.Outside of school I really enjoy participating in outdoor activities such snowboarding, surfing and hiking. Also, I’ve recently developed an interest in indoor rock climbing.I am excited to work with Habitat for Humanity on the First Nation Build project in Tsawwassen. I think it will be an excellent learning experience.
  • My name is David Klassen and I am a third year civil engineering student at UBC. I am interested in pursuing project/construction management after I finish my bachelors degree. I am excited to work with Habitat For Humanity to gain more real-world experience and for the opportunity to help a community.In my free time, I enjoy going for runs, and I go skiing whenever I can.I am looking forward to applying my knowledge to help the Tsawwassen First Nation. I believe that we have a good team and I am excited to see what we can accomplish with Habitat For Humanity.
  • My name is Sadaf Farzanehfar and I am in my third year of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia. I chose the Habitat For Humanity project because I am interested in helping the community. I believe that working with Habitat For Humanity is a great chance for me to gain valuable experience in my future profession.I spend my free time playing piano, and I enjoy going to the gym. I also used to figure skate competitively.Working with Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and Tsawwassen First Nation is an opportunity for us to make a difference. I am excited to put my academic skills to use on a real-world project that will help thousands of people. I am happy to be a part of this team
  • My name is Jedaiah van Dijk and I am a third year Civil Engineering student at the University of British Columbia. I am looking forward to work with the Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver and Tsawwassen First Nations as it will be exciting to apply the skills learned at university to real life projects.In my spare time I enjoy outdoor activities as well as traveling and exploring new places .
