About

Hello, my name is Claire Penny. I am an second year exchange student studying at the University of British Columbia during the summer semester of 2017. My degree is Master of Geology, it is a five year course therefore I graduate in the summer of 2020.

I am originally from Southern England, near a small city called Canterbury. However, I go to university in Scotland, at the University of Aberdeen. I chose to study Geology because I love studying the environment around us, how it formed and how processes in the past have shaped our present. I love travelling, and the fieldwork opportunities presented in this field appealed to me. I am naturally inquisitive, relish in discovering and learning new information and knowledge, and the study of Geology allows me to do exactly that. The University of Aberdeen is at the forefront of Earth Sciences research, and living in Scotland, in particular Aberdeenshire, means Great Britain’s stunning geological formations and incredible history is right on my doorstep.

I love to get involved as much as I can into both campus and social life. I currently play polo for my university, for which I am club secretary too, and we are unbeaten national champions for the second year running. We compete at Winter and Summer Nationals, inter-varsity tournaments and travel up and down the country for lessons and clinics, and we also have an annual trip to Argentina, the home of polo. I am also an active member of the equestrian, hockey, lairig, swimming and fitness clubs, write articles for Her Campus and am an enthusiastic member of the Geology Society, among others! I also manage to fit studying within all of that too!
