Its elegies, litanies, and indictments concern wonder, guilt, and grief about the journey of human life and the state of the natural world. When a child attempts suicide and western North America burns and the creep of mortality closes in, is spiritual and emotional solace possible or even desirable? Answers abound in measured, texturally intimate, and often surprising ways. The title sequence, named for a word that means \u201chatred of trees,\u201d sassily blurs the boundaries between human beings and Ponderosa pines, reminding us how fragile our conceptual frameworks really are. Another sequence responds to Julian of Norwich\u2019s writing and call \u201cto practise the art \/ of letting things happen.\u201d Saints\u2019 lives interlace with our quotidian experience, smudging connections between the spiritual and the earthly. Taking a hard look at what we have done to this beautiful planet and to those we love, <em>Arborophobia<\/em> is a companion for all who grapple with the problem of hope in times of crisis.<\/p>\n<p>(Description Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uap.ualberta.ca\/titles\/1031-9781772126020-arborophobia\">University of Alberta Press<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><em><br \/>\nAuthor <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>Nancy Holmes<\/strong> is an associate professor in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (FCCS) at UBC Okanagan. She has published six collections of poetry, namely <em>Arborophobia<\/em> (University of Alberta Press, 2022) and <em>The Flicker Tree: Okanagan Poems<\/em> (Ronsdale Press, 2012), a collection of poems about the place, people, plants, and animals of the Okanagan Valley in the southern interior of British Columbia. Nancy won the 2017 Malahat Review\u2019s Creative Non-Fiction award.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Nancy\u2019s poems, essays and short stories have been published in Canada, the UK, and Ireland. She is the editor of<em> Open Wide a Wilderness: Canadian Nature Poems<\/em> (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2009). She teaches Creative Writing and has been both Head of the Department of Creative Studies and the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in FCCS.
